Sustainability and continuity are about the long term. Digital infrastructure must not only work today, but must also be able to be maintained, transferred and continued responsibly. For LibreKAT this is a core value because public digital infrastructure is too important to be dependent on coincidental energy, coincidental people or coincidental financing.
Continuity starts with portability. If knowledge only resides with one developer, supplier or volunteer, a project is vulnerable. Documentation, clear governance, version control, release processes and a healthy community are not peripheral issues. They determine whether software can continue to exist when individuals leave.
Foundations of information security links continuity directly to duty of care. Availability is not just a technical convenience, but part of information security. Disruptions, software errors and the lack of a plan B can also be security incidents. Anyone who does not have a diversion, recovery or minimal emergency procedure increases the damage from the incident itself.
This also applies to organizations that use technology. An exit strategy that has never been tested offers limited certainty. A backup that no one can restore is, above all, hope. An open source project without maintenance is not a sustainable alternative. Continuity requires practice, assigning responsibilities and periodically testing whether reality is still correct.
Sustainability also has a physical side. Digital services run on energy, hardware, cooling, networks and raw materials. Data centers, chips and devices are part of geopolitical and ecological chains. Anyone who takes digital autonomy seriously must also ask where energy comes from, how hardware is depreciated and whether infrastructure can withstand scarcity, grid congestion and changing regulations.
In the sovereignty book, sustainability sovereignty returns as a long-term question: can a digital service continue to function within European energy, raw materials and sustainability frameworks? This makes sustainability not a separate climate label, but part of administrative resilience.
For LibreKAT this means that maintenance deserves as much appreciation as innovation. New features are visible and attractive. Maintenance, documentation and migration paths are quieter, but often more important. Many digital problems arise not because no one ever built anything good, but because no one remained responsible for management for the long term.
Sustainability also requires open knowledge. When methods, documentation, and source code are accessible, a community can build on what is there. If everything is locked up in closed formats or with one supplier, continuity becomes dependent on commercial choices. Sometimes sovereignty is not in the tool, but in the format, the knowledge and the ability to move.
Furthermore, continuity is an administrative choice. Boards must determine which systems are critical, what level of availability is needed, and which dependencies are acceptable. These choices belong in risk registers, in contracts, in purchasing and in periodic evaluations. What is not maintained will naturally deteriorate.
The PDCA cycle is therefore also a continuity instrument. Plan which Crown Jewels need protection and restoration. Do: set up measures and emergency scenarios. Check: test recovery, migration and operation. Act: anchor improvements and start again. Sustainability in this sense is organized repetition.
LibreKAT opts for the long term. Not by promising that nothing will ever change, but by making change possible without loss of control. Sustainable is what can be understood, maintained, replaced and passed on.
